Vintage Posters

Vintage posters were originally designed for use as outdoor advertising and began to appear in large numbers in the late 1890’s, first in Paris and thereafter throughout Europe. Initially, the posters were printed on cheap paper because they were intended to be used for only a few months and then were torn down or plastered over with new advertisements. They were used on kiosks, billboards, fences and buildings.

Jules Cheret is considered “The Father of The Poster” due to his skilled lithography and artistic design.

The vintage posters that exist today do so because collectors recognized their artistic merit and preserved them. Today, the original vintage posters (first printing) are eminently collectible. Reissues, the second and sometimes third printing of a vintage poster have made collecting them more affordable. High quality reproductions of the rare and expensive originals are published by specialty printing houses.

Posters are recognized as a genuine and desirable art form and express many artistic periods from Art Nouveau through Art Deco and Modernism. The wide variety of subjects, colors, sizes and design can add the perfect accent to any home, office or business.
